Trick or Treat: AYLA Free CLE, This Wednesday, October 31

Topic: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Travis County Local Rules But Were Afraid To Ask

Location: Austin Bar Association, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700

Each quarter, AYLA holds a free CLE for its members over the lunch hour. This Wednesday, the CLE will focus on mastering the Central Docket and the Travis County Local Rules. All those awaiting November Bar results are also invited to attend.

This CLE will not only review the basics, but address real problems confronted by AYLA members over the years and how they were resolved.

Led by a panel of senior AYLA attorneys, including former and current staff attorneys for state court judges, this CLE will be especially beneficial for lawyers new to Travis County (and those awaiting Bar results!).

So grab some lunch (lunch will not be provided) and head over to the Bar offices October 31 for this free Halloween Treat.

Franchise tax experts from the Texas Comptroller of Public accounts will present a free seminar to introduce the revised Texas franchise tax, sometimes referred to as "the Margins Tax," to taxpayers and their representatives. This program will provide valuable information to anyone interested in learning about the entities that are subject to the tax and the new margin calculation.

Volunteer for LegalLine, November 6

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Austin Young Lawyers Association is looking for volunteers for LegalLine, which is held the first Tuesday of every month. LegalLine provides the public the opportunity to obtain answers to simple legal questions from licensed attorneys. AYLA is expecting an especially high call volume in Nov. since LegalLine will be featured on News 8 throughout the day before the phone lines open. Federal Court Practice Seminar, Deadline This Wednesday, October 31

Sponsored by the Austin Chapter of the FBA and the Austin Bar Association, the evening will feature federal judges, experienced civil practitioners, criminal prosecutors, and federal public defenders. This seminar presents the nuts and bolts of federal court practice, with a focus on practicing in the Western District of Texas, as well as current hot topics, including electronic filing, new federal sentencing guidelines, and electronic discovery. The seminar satisfies the course requirement for admission to the Western District of Texas.

Marie Hejl and AYLA: A Recipe for Charity

Marie Hejl - often known as the "cooking lawyer" around Austin - is teaming up with the Austin Young Lawyers Association to raise money for Austin Young Lawyers Association's annual Holiday Baskets project. This project provides gifts (both useful and fun) and approximately $135 of groceries to an average of 75 Austin-area families.

Suits for Santa

Former President of AYLA, Jeff Rusk, is working in conjunction with AYLA to bring suits to SafePlace, a shelter for battered and sexually abused women. Please bring gently worn items to the AYLA office at 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700, now through Dec. 14.

Items can also be dropped off at any Austin Comet Cleaners. All business attire is accepted - suits, shoes, belts, ties, blouses, skirts, etc.

Many abused women are often forced to leave their homes quickly without clothes or personal belongings. Your donation will help these women begin a new, independent life.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

The state of Texas is currently holding an election, which includes 16 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. Early voting is available now through Friday, Nov. 2, at various locations throughout Travis County and the surrounding counties. For a list of Travis County early voting locations, please click here. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The proposed amendments involve a wide variety of issues. A sample ballot is available online. The League of Women Voters of Texas provides a non-partisan voters’ guide.
