Contributions in Memory of Emily C. Jones

Emily C. Jones, former executive director of the Texas Access to Justice Commission and former director of Texas Lawyers Care, died Aug. 3 following a five-year battle with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Jones, 60, began her involvement with pro bono and legal services during law school and never stopped. She joined Texas Lawyers Care, the legal services/pro bono support department of the State Bar of Texas, as a staff attorney in 1996 where she was quickly promoted to the TLC director position before becoming the executive director of the Commission.

Known as a feisty and strong-spirited advocate for access to justice initiatives in Texas, Jones committed her entire career to helping low-income Texans gain access to legal assistance. More than that, Jones led by example, even while facing personal health obstacles, inspiring other Texas attorneys to do pro bono work.

Contributions can be made to several places in memory of Jones to honor her selflessness and integrity:

  • GHRC-USA (Guatemalan Human Rights Commission) - a tax exempt 501c3 organization which has devoted its efforts to human rights work in Guatemala since 1982. Please send to Jennifer K. Harbury, 300 S. Texas Blvd., Weslaco, Texas 78596;
  • Texas Access to Justice Foundation;
  • Hospice Austin by mail (payable to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759), online, or by phone at 342-4700 or 800/445-3261;
  • your union's COPE fund.
You may also honor Jones by using your skills to provide access to justice for the less fortunate.
