Quad Section CLE & Mixer, May 5
This event is a free CLE & mixer sponsored by the ADR, Civil Litigation, Construction & Health Law Sections for section members only. Psychologist Dr. Robert Moats will discuss client personality types and dealing with them, as a litigator, mediator and practitioner.
Date: Tuesday, May 5
Location: McGinnis, Lochridge & Kilgore, 600 Congress Ave., Suite 2100
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a Happy Hour to follow
Cost: Free for and open only to ADR, Civil Litigation, Construction, and Health Law Section members
CLE: 4 Hours
RSVP: Debbie Maquet at 495-6136 or dmaquet@mcginnislaw.com
Your effectiveness as a mediator can be dependent upon your ability to read and work with the psychology of the participants. This presentation will offer a framework for identifying and collaborating with the psychology that underlies the positions taken by the parties and their attorneys. The overall goal is to improve your skills at overcoming rather than inadvertently increasing psychological resistance to resolution. Focus will be given to recognizing and differentiating between categories of psychological self-protection (with examples from films), and learning the respective "dos" and "don'ts" for reaching an agreement. The program will conclude with practice exercises.

Leapholes: Be a Bookworm for the Bar, May 11 - 14
If you missed out in participating in Leapholes last year, here's your chance to take part this year. In this short and easy-to-read novel, James Grippando educates young readers not only about the legal system but about the changes the legal system creates in society and invites young readers to analyze the benefits and detriments of historical legal precedent.
Be a part of legal history now by volunteering a couple hours of your time to discuss the book with young readers in our local schools between May 11 and 14. We do all of the work for you, all you have to do is curl up with a good book!
To volunteer, please click here to view the available class dates and times. Once you have selected a date and time that works best with your schedule, contact Brooke Williams at Brooke@austinbar.org or 472-0279 x108.
If you have questions about the project, please contact Law Related Education Co-Chair, Rob Robinson, at Robert.Robinson@oag.state.tx.us or Brooke Williams at Brooke@austinbar.org or 472-0279 ext. 108.

2009 Legal Build: Fundraising Shortage Causes Construction Delay
The Austin Bar Association and Austin Habitat for Humanity kicked off the fourth biennial Legal Build project on March 13. The goal was to start building a home for Tamika Nobles and her family in May, but the build start date has been postponed until June, at the earliest, because only $13,130 - i.e., about a fifth of the funds necessary to construct a home - had been donated to 2009 Legal Build. It is essential to make more progress, as Tamika and her three children will continue living in unsafe housing until the necessary $65,000 is raised to construct their home.
To start constructing the home in June, Legal Build must raise at least $32,500 by the end of May. Please click here and donate now so that this project can get started. Remember, donations are tax deductible.
The Legal Build Committee understands that in these tough economic times, many people are donating less than they would under normal circumstances. But consider this: if each member of the Austin Bar clicks on the link and gives $25, they will exceed their goal. So, please give as much as you can. Every cent matters!
For more information about the project, sponsorship opportunities, and other ways to get involved, please contact Mishell Kneeland at 965-5463. Thanks in advance for anything you can give to help change the lives of Tamika and her three children.

Join the Inaugural Class of Leadership State Bar of Texas
Be one of the first to join the class of Leadership State Bar of Texas in making a difference in our community! The Great Debate 2009, an essay and debate competition, will promote interest in legal careers and the field of law among high school students across Texas. Most importantly, the winners of the competition will be awarded substantial scholarships to attend college!
Notably, Austin has already recruited the largest number of student participants in this competition. Leadership SBOT will be having a local final competition with the support of Judge Eric Sheppard, Judge Lora Livingston, Judge Scott Jenkins, President of the Austin Bar Association Bob O'Boyle, and many others!
They are currently recruiting companies, firms, judges, individuals, and attorneys to support The Great Debate 2009 and impact the lives of high school students. Sponsors will receive recognition in all marketing materials as part of the final Debate Competition taking place at the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Texas. In addition to supporting such deserving high school students, this is an effective way to demonstrate your commitment to investing in our youth through recognition in publications that are supporting this initiative, and to remind your clients and peers of your commitment to our community - and the education of our youth.
Please view competition details and make a generous contribution at www.LeadershipSBOT.com through their PayPal account. Please direct questions and comments to Ami Desai.
