Make Your Voice Heard! Vote for Austin Bar and AYLA Leadership
Just five days left in the Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers Association elections for their respective 2008 – 2009 Boards of Directors. Electronic ballots for the races went out Friday, April 11 and voting ends May 2.
If you did not receive an electronic ballot or you choose to vote in person, you may do so at the Austin Bar/AYLA office, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700. In addition, the last chance to vote will be at the Law Day Luncheon & Annual Meeting on May 2 at the Sheraton Austin Hotel.
Officer positions are one-year terms. Director positions are for two years. Nominees for the office of president-elect shall have served at least two years on the Board of Directors prior to assuming office.

UT School of Law Dean to Speak on Religious Freedom, April 30

Speaker: Lawrence Sager
Cost: Free and open to the public
Lawrence Sager, dean of the University of Texas School of Law, will speak about religious freedom at the thirteenth annual George. S. Heyer, Jr. Lecture on April 30 at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Sager is one of the nation’s top constitutional scholars. The lecture will take place in the Seminary’s Shelton Chapel at 4:00 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
Sager is the author of a new book, Religious Freedom and the Constitution. He holds the John Jeffers Research Chair in Law and the Alice Jane Drysdale Sheffield Regents Chair at the law school. Sager came to the University of Texas School of Law from New York University School of Law where he was the Robert B. McKay Professor and co-founder of the Law, Philosophy & Social Theory program.

Travis County Family Drug Treatment Court CLE, May 1

Travis County has received grants to begin its first family drug treatment court. Judge Darlene Byrne invites you to a free CLE in her courtroom covering the ins-and-outs of this unique program.
The presentation will include a staged demonstration of a Drug Court hearing, funding sources for treatment, criteria for admission to Drug Court and how to refer clients, and much more.

Pick Me! A Jury of My Peers is Looking for Volunteers, Deadline May 6
The award-winning program is back this spring! We are looking for judges and lawyers who would like to volunteer their time to aid in educating high school students about the jury system. The response by the teachers, students, lawyers, and judges has been overwhelmingly positive. Two attorneys and one judge are needed for each classroom to conduct a mock voir dire.

Capital Punishment: Conversations, May 8

“Capital Punishment: Conversations” will be moderated by former Austin news
anchor, Dick Ellis. The presenters will include District Court Judge
Charlie Baird, Assistant District Attorney Gary Cobb, and defense attorney
Keith Hampton. The legal process of capital punishment in the state of
Texas will be explained and these three representatives of our legal system
will share their perspectives. The biblical perspectives will also be
presented by Rev. Terry Dowdy. There will be ample opportunity for
questions and audience participation will be encouraged.
There is no agenda to support any particular stance on this issue. The desire
is to only provide information that will better enable persons to form their
own positions on this very difficult subject.

Professional photographer Matthew Lemke is taking photos for the 2008 - 2009 Membership Directory May 19 – 21 at the Austin Bar office. He will schedule sessions for these three days before filling the rest of the week.
Matthew specializes in corporate headshots and executive portraits, as well as family portraits. For examples of his work, click here.
Each 15 minute session will cost $15 and is payable upon arrival with cash, check, or credit card. Also, although there is no obligation, participants will have a range of options for purchasing digital files for their own use.

Women's Resource Fair Just One Week Away - Items Still Needed
The Austin Young Lawyers Association is organizing the Women's Resource Fair, Saturday, May 3, 2008, from 9-3 at the Schmidt-Jones Family Life Center, located on the northwest corner of Lavaca Street and 13th Street. This ambitious project will provide numerous free services for homeless and battered women and children in the Austin area.
In addition to medical screenings, pediatric services, legal services, resume assistance, social services referrals, the event will include a "closet" for attendees to "shop" from, goody bags, and child care. The committee is requesting donations of:
women's business attire,
children's clothing,
women's toiletries, and
gently loved or new toys.
Attorney volunteers, including Spanish speakers, are also needed to provide legal assistance in the following areas: criminal law, family law, child support, domestic violence, protective orders, public benefit programs, immigration, housing, and consumer law. Also, general volunteers are needed to assist throughout the day in shifts of 3 to 4 hours.
