Be a Bookworm with the Bar, May 1

Date: Friday, May 1
Location: Austin Bar Association, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700
Speaker: James Grippando
CLE 1.0 hour of ethics
Cost: Free

The Austin Bar Association and the Office of the Attorney General present James Grippando, attorney and author of Leapholes, published by the American Bar Association. While Leapholes is technically fiction, all of the cases mentioned are actual and important cases from American legal history such as the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision. The characters in the story use leapholes to travel back in time to meet the people and experience the events behind the cases that establish precedent, good or bad, and define our current legal environment.

Grippando will discuss the ethical dilemmas presented by the book in the context of American history and the modern day legal environment. He will briefly discuss how to teach these themes when leading a discussion of the book to junior high or high school students as many attorneys attending this CLE may also volunteer to lead a discussion of Leapholes to junior high school students in Austin ISD.

If you are interested, please contact Law Related Education Co-Chair, Rob Robinson, at Robert.Robinson@oag.state.tx.us or Brooke Williams at Brooke@austinbar.org or 472-0279 ext. 108. Please RSVP for this information session by noon on Thursday, April 30.

Your effectiveness as a mediator can be dependent upon your ability to read and work with the psychology of the participants. This presentation will offer a framework for identifying and collaborating with the psychology that underlies the positions taken by the parties and their attorneys. The overall goal is to improve your skills at overcoming rather than inadvertently increasing psychological resistance to resolution. Focus will be given to recognizing and differentiating between categories of psychological self-protection (with examples from films), and learning the respective "dos" and "don'ts" for reaching an agreement.
