Date: Wednesday, April 23
Time:noon
Location: 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700
Speaker: Lucy Wood
Cost: Free; lunch is included
CLE: 1.0 hours

Communicating with a deaf client via laptop, e-mail, or written notes often causes genuine confusion on the part of the client and understandable frustration on the part of the lawyer. Nor can a well-meaning lawyer hope to get his words across by enunciating clearly. For these reasons, the Austin Bar and Advocacy, Inc. are holding a free ethics CLE at noon on Wednesday, April 23 titled “Representing Hearing Impaired Clients.”

This CLE will cover how you can best serve a deaf or hard-of-hearing client and your ethical obligation for effective communication. If interested in taking advantage of this free opportunity, RSVP to Michelle McFadyen at Michelle@austinbar.org.

Women's Resource Fair Needs Your Help, May 3

The Austin Young Lawyers Association is organizing the Women’s Resource Fair, Saturday, May 3, 2008, from 9-3 at the Schmidt-Jones Family Life Center, located on the northwest corner of Lavaca Street and 13th Street. This ambitious project will provide numerous free services for homeless and battered women and children in the Austin area.

Attorney volunteers, including Spanish speakers, are needed to provide legal assistance in the following areas: criminal law, family law, child support, domestic violence, protective orders, public benefit programs, immigration, housing, and consumer law. Also, general volunteers are needed to assist throughout the day in shifts of 3 to 4 hours.

For those unable to donate their time, the committee is also in need of several items to make this event a success. The list includes the following items:

  • women’s business attire,
  • children’s clothing,
  • women’s toiletries, and
  • gently loved or new toys.

  • The approximate 200 fair attendees will also need something sturdy and easy to carry to hold all of the information they will receive at the event. The committee requests donations of waterproof poly string envelopes with string-and-button closures or letter size red-rope expanding folders.

All donations may be dropped off at the Austin Bar office at 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700. Please contact Liz Branch at 565-4464 or branch@branchlawoffice.com to volunteer or for more information.

We do all of the work for you, all you have to do is curl up with a good book!
