Kick-Off AYLA Poker Tournament Committee Meeting, March 4

Participate in organizing the best AYLA party of the year! The annual AYLA Poker Tournament is a fun way for AYLA members to raise money and awareness for projects such as Holiday Baskets, Christmas for Kids, and They Had a Dream Too. Lots of volunteers are needed to make this event the success it has been in the past.

Snacks and adult beverages will be provided for all that attend.

Volunteer for LegalLine, March 4

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700

Volunteer to answer phones for the AYLA/LRS LegalLine program. Held the first Tuesday of every month between 5:30 and 7:30, LegalLine is a legal resource hotline. The commitment is small, just over two hours on a Tuesday night (volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:15 pm for a short orientation). All calls are anonymous, so your commitment ends when you hang up the phone.

SXSW Film Explores Rule of Law in Brazil, Beginning March 9

On February 12th, 2005, Sister Dorothy Stang, a Catholic nun from Dayton, Ohio, was shot six times and left to die on a muddy road in the Brazilian Amazon. Who was this woman? Why was she killed? And what will be done about it?

"They Killed Sister Dorothy" will premiere in competition on March 9 and 10 at the South by Southwest Film Festival. This feature-length documentary tracks the events following Stang's murder in Brazil. Produced by Oscar-winner Nigel Noble and narrated by Martin Sheen, “They Killed Sister Dorothy" captures the trial and the search for justice of those close to Stang.

2008 AYLA Service Awards - Nominations Due March 14

Each year at the Law Day Banquet, the Austin Young Lawyers Association presents two awards for outstanding community and professional service. Here is your chance to help recognize deserving individuals for the Outstanding Young Lawyer and the Liberty Bell award. Those awarded will represent AYLA in the statewide Texas Young Lawyers Association award competition. Nomination forms are due to AYLA on March 14. Petition for AYLA Board Nominations - Due March 14 AYLA is seeking attorneys interested in serving on its board of directors for the 2008-2009 bar year. Serving on the board is a great way to gain leadership skills, increase your network, and become more active in the community.

To be eligible for a board position, you must be a current AYLA member and be 36 years of age or under as of July 1, 2008, or licensed to practice law in Texas for less than three years. If you would like to be placed on the ballot, submit a nominating petition signed by five current AYLA members to Debbie Kelly at Debbie@austinbar.org or fax to 473-2720. Nomination petitions are due Friday, March 14.

Nominations for AYLA Outstanding Alumnus and Outstanding Mentor Awards - Due March 14 Do you know a lawyer who is truly spectacular and committed to making a difference? Nominate him or her for the AYLA Outstanding Alumnus or Outstanding Mentor awards. The Outstanding Alumnus award is given to an attorney over the age of 36 who was actively involved in the AYLA as an officer, director, committee chair, or committee member, and who has significantly distinguished himself or herself in the profession as an alumnus of our organization. The Outstanding Mentor award is an attorney of any age who has consistently demonstrated a firm commitment to successfully mentoring young lawyers in the Austin area legal community. The Austin Bar is working with a new photographer for the 2008 – 2009 Membership Directory. Matthew Lemke is a professional commercial and portrait photographer in Austin, and specializes in corporate headshots and executive portraits, as well as family portraits. For examples of his work, click here.

Each 15 minute session will cost $15 and is payable upon arrival with cash, check, or credit card. Also, although there is no obligation, participants will have a range of options for purchasing digital files for their own use.

TYLA’s National Trial Competition Coming to Austin, March 27 – 28

We all know that some of the best trial lawyers in the country are right here in Austin. In less than a month, 28 teams comprised of some of the best future trial lawyers will be in Austin and are looking for your assistance.

The Texas Young Lawyers Association and American College of Trial Lawyers are recruiting 168 judges to umpire and score the final rounds of the 33rd Annual National Trial Competition. Attorney participants can earn up to five hours of self-study CLE credit while helping the next generation obtain valuable experience and skills.

Volunteer Legal Services Needs Your Help!

Location: Monday clinics take place at Martin Middle School, 1601 Haskell St.; Wednesday clinics take place at Webb Middle School, 601 E. Saint Johns Ave.

This is a perfect opportunity for attorneys looking for a short term pro bono commitment. VLS needs attorneys to give one-on-one advice at their twice weekly legal clinics.

Monday night clinics are at Martin Middle School. Wednesday night clinics are at Webb Middle School. Clinics begin at 6 p.m. and usually wrap up between 8:00 or 8:30 p.m.
