170th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Texas, Jan. 13

Date: Wednesday, Jan. 13
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: Supreme Court of Texas, 201 W. 14th St.

On Jan. 13, 1840, then-Chief Justice Thomas Jefferson Rusk called the first session of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas, five years before Texas became a state. And, like all things Texas, the first case was anything but ordinary. According to James Paulsen, a South Texas College of Law professor who has researched the Texas Supreme Court's history, the first case considered and decided was Ex Parte Robinson, which involved an indictment again James W. Robinson, who was then on the Supreme Court. Robinson was indicted for murder and other offenses, but the Supreme Court dismissed the indictment and Robinson resigned.

The 170th anniversary celebration will begin with an open session with special remarks made by Chief Justice Wallace B. Jefferson, State Bar of Texas President Roland K. Johnson, Justice Nathan L. Hecht, and Texas Supreme Court Historical Society President Larry McNeill.

A reception will follow at the Texas Law Center (1414 Colorado St.) in the Hatton Sumners Conference Room.

AYLA Day of Service, Jan. 18

Remember that on MLK Day, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., AYLA will initiate a Day of Service project in Austin. This local project is modeled after the national MLK Day of Service, which is intended to transform Dr. King's life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems. The idea is to help people unite through service to strengthen communities, empower individuals, and bridge social barriers.

AYLA coordinated the following community service events and still needs volunteers for all but the first event:

(1) Capital Area Food Bank - FULL. Volunteers will inspect, clean, sort, and weigh donated food items that the CAFB will distribute to local families in need. To sign up to volunteer and/or receive additional information, contact Kennon Peterson at kennonpeterson@hotmail.com.

(2) Goodwill Greenworks Program - This is Goodwill's computer recycling program. Goodwill needs 10 - 15 volunteers from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. to disassemble (by screwdriver) donated computers and separate their component parts for recycling. Goodwill will provide all the tools and gloves. Children may volunteer, but they are required to wear goggles and must bring their own gloves. To sign up to volunteer and/or receive additional information, contact Amy Welborn at amy.welborn@khh.com.

(3) The Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas - The Center needs 10 - 15 volunteers from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. to assist with consolidating items that the Center is moving from a storage room to its main offices. To sign up to volunteer and/or receive additional information, contact Lauren Kleine at lauren.kleine@oag.state.tx.us.

(4) Travis Audubon Society's Blair Woods Restoration Project - The Travis Audubon Society owns a ten-acre wooded sanctuary on the east side of Austin known as Blair Woods. The Society needs 10 volunteers from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to assist with improvements to Blair Woods as part of a more comprehensive restoration project intended to (1) restore this urban habitat to its native condition so that the wildlife dependent upon this habitat will thrive; and (2) offer Blair Woods to neighbors as a "living lab" for educational workshops and educational family activities. To sign up to volunteer and/or receive additional information, contact Dustin Howell at dustinmhowell@gmail.com.

(5) SafePlace Ultimate Landscaping Project - SafePlace needs 10-15 volunteers to assist with this landscaping project from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Facilities projects like these save SafePlace thousands of dollars each year. The money saved by having volunteer teams complete these projects allows the organization to put the saved funds towards client services such as emergency shelter and counseling. To sign up to volunteer and/or receive additional information, contact Emily Howell at Emily.howell@tlc.state.tx.us.

AYLA is asking everyone in the local legal community to volunteer and encourage their friends and family members to volunteer on MLK Day. Please sign up today to make a positive difference in your community!
